VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

Overview

Vocational education is a vital aspect of our programs at Base Camp. Understanding that not all young people are looking to college in their future, we are very committed to introducing our kids to potential career opportunities in vocational fields. With that in mind we provide a variety of opportunities in vocational education, including auto mechanics, machining and fabrication, STEM education, agriculture, culinary arts, and construction. This allows them to experience multiple fields that they may want to consider pursuing as they continue their education. We are grateful to the many volunteers and businesses that dedicate their time and efforts to expose our kids to these very important career paths at an early age so that they have skills and knowledge necessary to assist them in making decisions for their futures.

Auto Mechanics

Kids are taught basic skills such as identifying the parts underneath the hood of a
vehicle, as well as how to change the oil, spark plugs, and to change and rotate tires.
They also learn what the various fluids are, how to check them and refill them as
necessary.

Machining and Fabrication

Base Camp members are introduced to the basics of machining and fabrication. They learn how a solid piece of metal, by using a variety of power-driven tools, can be shaped into an intended part that is ultimately used to build vehicles, appliances, power wheelchairs and a host of other products. They learn about the different tools used to accomplish this, as well as how to use them safely and appropriately.

Agriculture

In our agriculture program, kids learn all about planting, tending, and harvesting fruits and vegetables. We also teach about composting and the importance of caring for the earth. As fruits and vegetables are harvested, we teach the kids about healthy and nutritional ways to use the vegetables in meals.

STEM Education

Because there are so many career opportunities within the realm of STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics), at Base Camp young people are offered the opportunity to participate in our weekly STEM Club where they engage in a hands on
curriculum that teaches the basic skills of coding, electrical, engineering, and
construction. Participation in our STEM Club offers kids exposure to a wide range of
fields that may one day lead to a career path for them.
